Earl Grey tea is a flavored black tea that is traditionally made with oil of bergamot, a citrus fruit. The distinctive flavor of Earl Grey tea comes from the addition of this oil, which is extracted from the peel of the bergamot orange (Citrus bergamia). The tea is named after Charles Grey, the 2nd Earl Grey, who was a British Prime Minister in the 1830s.

The exact origin of Earl Grey tea is a bit unclear, and there are several stories about how the blend came to be. One popular legend suggests that a Chinese tea master created the blend as a gift for Lord Grey, using bergamot to offset the lime flavor in the local water. Another story attributes the creation of Earl Grey tea to a diplomatic mission to China, during which Lord Grey received the tea as a gift.

Regardless of its origin, Earl Grey tea has become a classic and popular tea variety. The combination of black tea and bergamot oil gives it a distinctive and fragrant flavor profile, with a balance of citrusy and floral notes. It's often enjoyed with or without milk and sugar, depending on personal preferences.
